How to tackle ageing skin with your skincare routine

Hannah Wilson

Slowing the signs of ageing can sometimes seem like a losing battle - especially when you’re competing with, well, nature. Can something as simple as a five-step skincare routine really stop the clock? Or at least slow it down?

It can! Here at Face Dr, we understand the power of high quality skincare and witness first-hand the incredible effects a consistent routine can have. When it’s composed of the right products, you can use your skincare routine to treat pretty much any skin concern - including ageing skin.

To help you on your way, we’ve put together a five-step anti-ageing skincare routine built from products we know do the job properly. It’s quick, effortless and (as long as you keep at it) you’ll be reaping the benefits in no time. Read on to find out more. Step 1: Cleanse

Woman Cleansing skin

No matter your age, you should never stop cleansing. This is the most important part of any skincare routine. It’ll free your skin from harmful toxins, daily grime and and pore clogging bacteria.

As we age, our skin tends to dehydrate due to slow oil production and exposure to external aggressors (such as UV rays and pollutants). You’ll therefore want to avoid anything too harsh and hydrate as much as possible. Steer clear of foaming face washes and opt for something creamy and nourishing.

ZO Skin Health Hydrating Cleanser

Skin Expert recommendation: ZO Skin Health Hydrating Cleanser works to quench thirsty skin without leaving any greasy residue. The formula also contains allantoin to help soothe and calm any inflammation.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Man Exfoliating skin

Slough off dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliant. This is an essential step in any anti-ageing routine. As we grow older our skin’s ability to regenerate slows down, so it’s important to give it a helping hand along the way.

However, skin also becomes thinner with age so it’s important not to be too rough with it. ZO Skin Health's Exfoliating Polish contains tiny, eco-friendly magnesium crystals that act as an exfoliating agent and help purge your skin of any unwanted flakiness. The resurfacing properties of the ingredients will gently reinvigorate your skin, leaving it looking youthful and glowing.

Step 3: Apply a serum

ZO Skin Health Serum Retinol

Serums are saviours for ageing skin. They tend to contain higher concentrations of active ingredients and so really pack a punch and will help you take your skincare routine to the next level.

That being said, it’s important you don’t overload your skin with too many potent ingredients as this could cause irritation. Know the concern you want to treat and find a product that tackles that. We’ve listed a couple of our favourite serums from ZO Skin Health to help you on your way.

  • ZO Firming Serum: Powered by ZCORETM complex and sodium DNA to support and anchor the skin. Perfect for anyone looking to tackle sagging skin, this breakthrough in skincare firms and tightens to leave your face looking defined and youthful. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.
  • ZO Radical Night Repair Serum: Packed with high-potency, microencapsulated retinol (1%) this powerful age defying product will give your skin its glow back. Fight off hyperpigmentation, dullness and oxidative stress with this anti-oxidant rich treatment.
  • ZO Wrinkle + Texture Repair Serum: Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with this potent skin smoother. With 0.5% retinol ZCORETM complex you’ll be waving goodbye to wrinkles in no time.

With a high-quality serum, you might not even need a separate hydrating product at all, so choose one that will work for you.

Step 4: Target eye area

Eyes

The skin around your eyes is thinner than anywhere else on your body, meaning it’s all the more susceptible to signs of ageing. It also means you need to treat them with some extra care.

Specially formulated eye serums exist to give an ageing eye area the treatment it needs without being too harsh. It’s an extra step, we know, but it’s worth it if it means fighting off dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet - right?

HydraFirm Eye Brightening Repair Crème is specifically formulated for dark circles. Helps to minimise the multiple signs of ageing, including puffiness, dark circles and fine lines by hydrating the delicate skin around your eyes.

Make sure to apply your eye serum or cream both in the morning and before bed for the best results.

Step 5: Hydrate & Protect (Don't moisturise!)

Hydrating products

Mature skin needs all the moisture it can get, especially if you’re using products that contain retinol which can sometimes dry you out. Replenish any lost moisture with a rich and nourishing cream that’ll promote hydration and cell renewal.

Everywhere you look there are bombarding messages from self-proclaimed beauty gurus and skincare brands insisting that moisturising your face is an imperative. But guess what? Your face does not actually need any moisturisers. It is more likely that you have made your skin addicted to this product.

Your skin has its own mechanisms to hydrate itself, moisturisers are just a crutch. What’s more, moisturisers don’t just inhibit your skin’s own natural hydration process, but can also speed up the ageing process! Moisturisers slow down the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen which means dull skin and wrinkles.

The most important thing you can do is ensure you have the correct hydrating products and serums, that help your skin regenerate moisture naturally, rather than packing artificial moisture into your skin. Protecting your skin from sun damage and blue light exposure can prevent the signs of premature ageing to the skin.

ZO Broad Spectrum SPF 50  is the ideal SPF sunscreen, protecting your facial skin. Lightweight and non-irritating, this mineral sunscreen is for the most sensitive skin types and post-procedure skin. Provides broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Natural melanin shields skin from ageing effects of high-energy visible (HEV) light. ZOX12® Engineered with our exclusive 12-hour, time-release ZOX12® complex, this suncream helps shield the skin from harmful infrared (IR-A) rays.
